NEW YORK, May 27
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On2 Technologies, Inc. today announced that it has
proposed to the DVD Forum that VP6 be used as the compression technology for
High Definition DVD (HD DVD). The DVD Forum, based in Tokyo, represents over 200
companies involved in the content, technology, licensing and manufacturing of
DVDs. The DVD Forum was founded by ten large consumer electronics,
semiconductor, and content companies for exchanging and disseminating ideas
about the DVD format.
On2 has previously submitted VP4 and VP5, with each
codec carrying a different licensing structure for use in DVDs and HD
DVDs. "The cost of DVDs and players is negatively influenced by license
fees which are too high," said Douglas A. McIntyre, Chairman, President and
Chief Executive Officer of On2. As this governing body looks to HD DVD,
the price issue can be remedied by using On2's ultra-high quality video
compression for both the discs and playback devices," Mr. McIntyre
added.
On2's proposals call for tiered fees based on whether the DVD
Forum
recommends VP4, VP5 or VP6. The company has suggested pricing for its
new
codec, VP6, which is below current pricing for MPEG and Microsoft
Windows
Media compression technology.
