One Terabyte opitical discs available within 1 year

The Japanese company Optware has announced that it will be able to produce 1 Terabyte discs within one year. 1TB is 1024 GB.

The company uses hologram recording to be able to store this big amount of data on the discs. Here are the specifications as given on the website:

Development of advanced optical disk storage system with very high memory capacity and very high transfer rate.

Optware Corporation is developing "optical disk storage system (both recording and replay) with very high memory capacity and very high transfer rate" by integrating hologram recording technology and optical disk technology. The followings are detailed features of this system:

  • Just CD size (Disk diameter: 120mm)

  • Capacity: over 1 tera byte (CD-ROM 2,000 pieces; DVD-ROM 120 pieces)

  • Transfer Rate: over 1 Gbps

  • CD/DVD upper compatibility

  • Direct connection with optical fiber communications network

  • The problem with these things are always that they have been developed and announced but we are almost never able to buy them. This company is planning to release this technology to the public within one year, but that brings us to another common problem; how much $$$ ?
