Optima Technology continues Roxio lawsuit with Sonic

Recently we reported that software company Optima Technology has
sued Roxio over patent infringement. According to the company Roxio would
have violated Optima's patent #5,566,531 also known as the 'Recordable CDROM
Accessing System' patent. Publicly traded Roxio could possibly lose
several millions dollars when the lawsuit is lost or settled. Recently
Roxio, its brand name and assets, were aquired by Sonic Solutions.

In a recent talk with the CEO of Optima Technology we learned
that the company is now also after Sonic. The company will seek a cease-and-desist order to shut down Sonic. Optima CEO Robert Adams
told us that his company would love to settle the case so they could also
pursue other violators of the patent. However it appears to Optima that Roxio
and Sonic feel they can "thumb their nose in court" and "walk over the
intellectual property of Optima". This is based on the fact that Roxio and Sonic
disregarded the recent Federal ruling against them in the 'Markman hearing'.

Optima also offers limited
amnesty for companies who are making use of their patent but who have seeked to
purchase a license to use software using Optima's patent. According to
Optima's CEO the company has already been approached by several major
Japanese companies to license it.
