Pact lights way to next generation DVD standards

Blue Laser, that's the future. The big electronic giants have agreed that the next generation DVD players and writers will be using a blue laser instead of the current red one.

It will also end the current struggle of finding a standard for reading and writing as currently is the problem with the red laser DVD's.

The new blue-laser format, which could appear in products as early as next year, will feature up to 27 GB of memory on one side of a single 12-centimeter disc, nearly six times the capacity of current 4.7-GB discs, and store more than two hours of digital high-definition motion pictures.

Also agreeing to the format were Japan's Hitachi, Pioneer and Sharp; South Korea's Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics; and France's Thomson Multimedia.

Licensing of the new DVD format will begin in the spring.

Company executives repeatedly ducked questions about when they might launch new blue-laser products, although the goods are widely expected to appear in tandem with the introduction of digital high-definition broadcasting.

Well if you are planning to buy a 'red laser' DVD writer you might want to wait spending a lot of bucks on this, because the next standard is bound to come, and it's bigger, better and most important compatible !
