Panasonic introduces 3 new DVD recorders and 2 new players

Panasonic Canada has unveiled two new DVD players (DVD-S29 and DVD-S77) and three new DVD recorders (DMR-ES10, DMR-ES30V and DMR-EH50).  All five players can playback DVD-Video, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, Video CD, Audio CD, CD-R/RW and MP3 audio.  The DVD-s77 and three DVD recorders also support DVD-Audio and JPEG.  Finally the DVD-S77 also supports HDCD discs and HighMAT.

The DVD-S29 supports advanced progressive scan image rendering to provide a clearer image and provides an extended frequency range for playing back CDs.  The DVD-S77 has a HDMI interface to provide better picture quality to HDMI compatible displays as this gives a pure digital link between the player and display.  It can also perform up-conversion to HDTV at 720p or 1080i to suit HDTV displays that do not support standard definition TV over HDMI.

All three DVD recorders feature recording support for DVD-R/RW, DVD+R and DVD-RAM, very quick start-up & recording, Electronic Program Guide display, up to 500 lines even in LP mode (unlike previous models) and a 12-bit analogue-to-digital image converter.  The DVD-ES30 features a VHS VCR and the DVD-EH50 features a 100GB HDD.

Panasonic Canada added the DVD-S29 and the DVD-S77 multi-format players to its 2005 DVD product line.

Model DVD-S29 can play back DVD-video, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, +R, DVD-RW, +RW, video and audio CD, CD-R/CD-RW, WMA and MP3 formats.  This player boasts advanced progressive scan image rendering for clear pictures with less jitter, high quality sound with enhanced frequency response in CD playback mode, and Dialog Enhancer for DVD movies.

The DVD-S77 (seen below) can play back all the formats listed above, plus 5.1 channel DVD-Audio, JPEG and HDCD.  This model also adds HighMAT for enhanced interoperability with personal computers, and an HDMI interface for exceptional audio and video quality with a single connection. The DVD-S77 can up-convert the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles to 720p/1080i to more closely match the capabilities of today's high definition televisions.

It is nice to see support for DVD-Audio coming to more
DVD players and even these DVD recorders.  I'm quite surprised that these
DVD recorders all lack DVD+RW support, since if this type was supported, the recorders would support all types of DVD recordable media as well as potentially offer the features limited to DVD+RW such as being able to playback a recording in a DVD player without finalising the disc.
