We already dedicated some news items to fake TY codes that are available on the market. These discs are most of the time manufactured by smaller companies, usually they use the Taiyo Yuden Media Identifaction Code. The Media Identification Code (MID) is simplified, a code that is on a DVD recordable and by which the DVD burner can recognize the disc by matching the MID with a list in the firmware of the DVD burner. When it finds the MID, it knows the right writing strategy to burn the disc at rated speed and often also with the best quality.
Taiyo
Yuden is known as a high class brand and is widely supported and therefor it's usually their MID that is used by smaller companies to enhance the compatibility of their media in DVD burners. This is done because many DVD burner manufacturers have difficulties to support all media available on the market. Each MID requires its own writing strategy and it takes time to develop those. Earlier did one of our forum members who goes by the name dakhaas already explain more in detail why this is happening, now he is able to add the response of Philips who is responsible for DVD+R licensing.

For DVD+R codes are required to be The company who is confronted with misuse of his registered MID code is in a number of legislations able to start successfully a legal action. There are already two cases known to me where actions are taken and the company misusing stopped producing such discs |
This was in response to a story we posted earlier in which we quoted an email from a MAM-A engineer. MAM-A was using a TY MID code and many members where doubting if MAM-A was allowed to do so. Discuss this in our Blank Media Forum .
