A while back we already reported that Pioneer
would start selling DVD-dual drives (the DVR-A06). Today we can read on DigiTimes that Pioneer has also planned to sell DVD-Dual
solution kits in August of this year and besides that, Pioneer will also
launch their first slim-type (notebook) DVD-RW drives:
Japan-based Pioneer will start selling DVD-RW and DVD-Dual
solution kits in August and expects to launch its first slim-type,
notebook-use DVD-RW and DVD-Dual drives in the second half of this year,
according to subsidiary Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan.
The solution kits will include Pioneer's
optical pick-up head (PUH) and controller chips from other companies like
NEC. Consulting services and technical support will also be provided to
help customers produce their own optical storage drives, the company
said.
Pioneer has a monthly capacity of 400,000
recordable DVD drives, which is expected to grow to 600,000 by the end of
June. It could double its capacity to 1.2 million units by year-end, as it
will complete its second factory in Dongguan, (Guangdong Province) China
in August, said Shannon Yu, general manager of Pioneer China Holding
Cooperation. |
According to the article, Pioneer's total recordable DVD drive shipments in
2003 are expected to reach four million units, compared to 2.2 million in
2002.
