GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that software pirates alone were able to steal more than $79 million worth of software during October. This is according to The DOPIP Security Counterfeit Intelligence Report, which is written up by the Canadian outfit the Gieschen Consultancy. The USA was the best at catching software pirates catching around 38% of counterfeit goods, Taiwan came second catching around 20%, with Italy getting 9% and the UK 7%. The
report showed that most counterfeit operations are done by small groups with a very wide range of ages, from teenagers to senior citizens.
| The US was the best at catching the pirates and managed to capture 38 percent of the seized goods. Taiwan managed to get 20 per cent, Italy nine per cent and the UK seven per cent. The report said that the profile of the average counterfeit operation involves six people, "between the ages of 15 and 61 years old" so it could be anyone then. They will usually sell more than 40,000 counterfeit items valued at $140,000 USD items before being caught. So the secret then would be to quit when you have sold 39,999 items. When they are caught, the plods will find more than 61,000 counterfeit items just lying around the place with a street value of about $184,000. So your average pirate is a bit untidy. And that is only in October. |
