this to say: "Not much of a surprise; wonder if Blu-ray will get pushed back too?"
The article at C|Net went on to say what we already know, that the hangup is with the content providers not being able to reach an agreement with the hardware developers. It is unfortunate that Hollywood content was deemed so important to the new blue laser format. It would have been nice to launch both as a storage medium only. But, one of the hypes of the increased storage was that it was ideal for distributing films in high definition format. There must be an incentive to get people to make the switch from the very economical and user friendly DVD.
This must be music to the ears of Microsoft and even the HD-DVD camp. However, once the warm glow of the announcement wears off, then they might realize that this has also affected HD-DVD. We have heard the films are also delayed on this medium of course, for the same reasons we can assume. At least the Xbox 360 sales will remain brisk, as there is no return fire from Sony on the PS3. Microsoft is probably also patting themselves on the back for not including a blue laser drive in the platform.
What a shame that such exciting technology is in the hands of Hollywood and not ours. Meanwhile, we can continue to use DVD without feeling much pain over this, but the corporations behind both strategies must be getting impatient to launch. The amount of investment in the blue laser format is high and with two formats, it just makes it worse.
