Playstation 3 Blu-ray drives will cost Sony a small fortune

Sony must
be pretty serious in promoting the Blu-ray format. According to an article at
the Inquirer
the company is going to pay more than $100 per Playstation 3 console for the Blu-ray drive. The upcoming console, which is expected to be sold in millions over the years should push the format to many house-holds. The article blames the Blu-ray drive as one of the reasons the Playstation 3 will be likely more expensive than the XboX 360.

Microsoft is playing a safe game here, it will launch with DVD+RW but in some point in the future might release a new Xbox 360 version with HD-DVD or a Blu Ray drive. We don't expect that this will happen anytime soon, but we are sure it will happen at some point in the next few years.

For the Blu-ray format this might be the push they need. The Japanese electronic giant can still count on enormous fanbase that will also need to purchase games on Blu-ray discs but can also use the Playstation 3 to play movies, and if those are also available on Blu-ray....
