Playstation 3 will display 1080p 16x9 ratio

Of course
yesterday Sony came out swinging with news of it's upcoming Playstation 3 in
response to the massive press of Microsofts awesome Xbox360. If you have an
Internet connection and a browser, you would have to work hard to miss any of
the news. One thing that catches ones eye is even though the Xbox is very
powerful, the Playstation 3 has twice the computing power of the new Xbox
360.
Yet the National Ledger had a little information for those that are into HDTV like some CD Freaks are. It seems the PlayStation is capable of 1080p resolution in the 16x9 format. If we look at plasmas and even some rear projection sets, we can see that the 1080p sets are coming. While at CES this last January, we were able to take a gander at a few there. I must say that the difference between 480p that we enjoy now while watching a DVD on a progressive scan player and 1080p is impressive, giving the coveted "through the window" effect.

The PS3 will also display at 1080p in a 16:9 ratio. It will support two video outputs, meaning if you happen to have two HDTVs lying around, you can connect them together and have a combined 32:9 HDTV panoramic display.

The PS3 will use the Blu-ray disc format, capable of holding 50 gigabytes of information, which is about seven times the capacity of existing DVDs, as well as slots for additional memory cards, a detachable hard drive, Bluetooth wireless for up to seven wireless controllers and the console will also play CDs and DVDs. That means the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games can be played on the new system as well.

I am not into games that much and I don't have the guts to ask for a 1080p display after just springing for a 42" plasma. But, maybe I'll win the lottery in the next 9 months or something. The point is, those that have not taken the plunge already, you could get a PlayStation 3 use it for gaming and as a nice 1080p display to enjoy HD television and (hopefully) some content next year!
