Plextor, a well known company for professional DVD writing equipment has just released an external 16x DVD writer aimed at mainstream cost conscious PC users. Like the PX-740A, this drive provides the same high performance and quality of its professional drive range, while lacking the professional features that most consumers would unlikely ever use.
The PX-740UF is black in colour, features both USB 2.0 and Firewire ports and will function with both Windows based PCs and Apple Macintosh systems. The recorder supports up to 16x DVD±R writing from either interface. Other write speeds include up to 8X DVD+R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 4x DVD-R DL. For CD writing, it supports up to 48x CD-R and 32x CD-RW.
The drive is shipped with Nero 6 software suite, which includes Nero Express 6, NeroVision Express 2 SE, Nero PhotoShowExpress, Nero ShowTime and InCD. The drive has a suggested retail price of US$179 and is immediately available to distributors within North and South America.

The concept behind the PX-740 Series drives is simple: give customers the very fast recording speed and high level of reliability for which Plextor is known, without professional features they don't need. Now customers can choose between the internal PX-740A and external PX-740UF versions, with both models delivering the same industry leading performance and quality. A dual interface supports both Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and full-speed compliant IEEE-1394 FireWire(R), enabling Plextor customers to easily share a single external high-performance DVD/CD recorder among multiple Apple(R) Macintosh(R) and Microsoft(R) Windows(R)-based personal computer systems. Burst data transfer rates of 480 Mbps (USB) or 400 Mbps (Firewire) allow a user to burn a 4.7GB DVD+R disc in approximately six minutes. |
It is interesting to see an external DVD writer with both USB 2.0 and Firewire ports. The Firewire support does have the advantage of using less CPU resources than with USB, thus being an advantage to consumers who need an external DVD writer, while also need to work on other applications while the writing process takes place.
