Progress in blue laser diode technology

According to a news published at EETimes, Shuji Nakamura and his team at University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB), created a new type of blue-violet laser diode that they say could replace the c-plane violet laser diodes used for competing next-generation DVD formats.

The new laser diode uses nonpolar gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors which, according to Nakamura, require lower operating power and have longer lifetimes.
