Progresses in holographic data storage

According to a news published at Ars Technica, scientists of Technical University of Berlin were able to store 500GB of data on DVD-sized discs, and claimed that there are plans to further increase the storage capacity to 1TB by 2010.

These results were obtained using microholographic recording techniques and using also a multilayer approach; in this way it is possible to obtain higher capacities than currently available holographic techniques.

Currently this technique is still under development, so there are no info available about production costs of discs and recording devices. In other words, it will be necessary much more time to see the first holographic burner in consumers market.
