Quanta plans to release its first DVD+RW writer this summer

Quanta Storage is currently an optical notebook OEM drive manufacturer but the company has now announced that it will release a desktop DVD+RW writer sold under its own brand name:

Quanta Storage will use Philips Semiconductor's DVD+RW solution kits for the product. Each solution kit includes a laser optical pick-up head (PUH) as well as components such as controllers, encoders and decoders.

In the future, the company may change some of the product's firmware to suit DVD-Dual optical drives.

* To launch DVD+RW drives in June and DVD-dual drives in August. ** To launch DVD+RW drives in August and DVD-dual drives further on

It unfortunately looks like Lite-On's dual format writers will not ship in volume before August now if DigiTimes information is correct. The reason in that case is probably the shortage of components.
