RIAA gets its hands on Grokster users

The following story was submitted by the Sentinel, thanks!

The RIAA (The Recording Industry Authorities) are now using a new tactic to directly combat file sharing on the Grokster/Kazaa network. If you are found to have files the RIAA believe to have copyright on, they are now contacting Grokster directly in an attempt to stop these files being shared and possibly even remove users from the network completely.

The typical message being sent out by Grokster is as follows: -

Dear *******,

Grokster has been notified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) of allegations that you have made available for download certain files that infringe the copyrights of others. Pursuant to Grokster's terms of use, continued violations of the rights of others will result in termination of your username registration. Please take whatever steps are appropriate to avoid further infringement. If, after a 48-hour waiting period, we receive a second such allegation, we will be forced to terminate your username registration. If you believe you have been unjustly accused of infringement, or have any questions concerning the RIAA's allegations, please contact the RIAA directly, at http://www.riaa.org/Contact.cfm, and send a copy to us at abusemail@grokster.com.

Grokster
It then goes on to list the files the RIAA believe are infringing their copyright. Needless to say, these include songs by Metallica.

What is interesting is they do not appear to be targeting the 'big fish' but rather anyone sharing files by particular artists. I wonder if this also includes possession of the junk files they are currently poluting the network with.
