Report underscores continuing growth of DVD recording

I think
we can all agree that the DVD recording market is booming, the PC recorders and
standalone recorders are all rapidly getting cheaper and more and more people
discover the convenience of backing up data/games/movies and recording
movies and TV shows to DVD instead of CD-Rs or VHS tapes. According to a recent
report
- sponsored by the DVD-RAM promotion group - from the research company Understanding & Solutions the amount of DVD recorders will even  surpass DVD players in 2006. The report has also some interesting information on DVD-RAM marketshares.

"We're encouraged by the findings of the Understanding & Solutions report," said Tony Jasionowski, Executive Technology Director, RAMPRG. "Not only does it point to a bright future for the DVD industry, but it shows that when consumers consider purchasing a DVD recorder, they will most often vote for the very flexible DVD-RAM format with their pocketbooks."

According to the report, over 40 million DVD Recorders will be sold around the world in 2006. And, this year, sales of DVD-RAM units will grow by 116% over 2003.

"DVD-RAM Recorders continue to outstrip other formats in sales," said David Millar, Principal Consultant, Understanding & Solutions. "Our figures indicate that DVD-RAM currently maintains a 55% share of the worldwide DVD Recorder deck market, which encompasses the United States, Japan and Western Europe. In fact, DVD-RAM holds roughly two times the share of the next most popular format."

As the
report
is sponsored by the DVD-RAM group this information can be considered to be biased and honestly I think daily experiences show that there must have been some fiddling with numbers because we hardly see any recorders with DVD-RAM support and even less people using it. A recent survey indicated that the global DVD-RAM marketshare is about 10%. The format is most popular in Japan and has some good market shares in standalone DVD recorders globally.
