Rock beats manufactured pop in Europe-Music Choice survey

According to this article over at P2P Net, results from the first European Music
Census, indicate Rock and Roll is here to stay. Only one reality TV contestant
appeared in the most listened to artist category in all of Europe - Bisbal,
Spain's equivalent of Pop Idol. The findings are based on a sample of over
30,000 music fans, compiled by Europe's Music Choice.

Rock is the most listened to genre in six of the
eight countries surveyed. Europe's most-listened-to is Robbie Williams, who was
number one in the UK, Denmark, Germany and Norway. Other popular UK artists are
Radiohead and David Bowie, 7th and 10th in the Swedish most listened to list.
Scottish indie rockers Travis, beat out Elvis (gasp!) in the Norwegian
chart at number 9.

Other findings:

  • Brits have the largest record collections
in Europe - 39% of us own over 200 albums

  • Eighty-five percent of Brits think music
    is too expensive to buy

  • Over a quarter spend 21 hours or more
listening to music every week - that's 1,095 hours per year, or more
    than 45.6 days

  • The most listened to artists in Britain
    this year were:
    1. Robbie Williams
    2. Coldplay
    3.
    Radiohead
    4. Eminem
    5. Shaggy
    6. Dido
    7. Red Hot Chilli
    Peppers
    8. Justin Timberlake
    9. The White Stripes
    10.
    Queen

The census revealed a multitude of interesting facts: "All but two
of the countries surveyed (Norway and Denmark) considered their nation's singles
chart - often filled with manufactured pop acts - to be an invalid indicator of
people's actual listening preferences. In Britain, 82% of the population no
longer feel the singles chart is an accurate barometer of musical taste."
