could very well have an impact upon online music websites there, such as AllofMP3.com. The site sells music tracks without any DRM at ridiculously low prices. Using a loophole in the law, AllofMP3.com has been so far immune to any legal action, despite strong pressure from the United States. It is also quite a questionable practice for anyone outside the country to purchase from the Russian site, as laws in other countries differ. In the meantime, the AllofMP3 website has become so popular, that it is only second to iTunes in Europe. However, it looks like time is running out, as new laws there will offer the same copyright protections to digital works as physical ones...

The new rules were agreed in 2004, but websites were given two years to sign the necessary licences in order to avoid prosecution. But according to Russian news service Kommersant, this has not happened. The site says that 97 per cent of music on the Russian Internet is traded or shared without authorisation and sites such as AllofMP3 continue to sell outside Russia despite the absence of an approved licence. |
