Russia urged to crackdown on piracy


Our daily piracy report comes today from Russia. The US has asekd Russia to put more efforts in fighting piracy, as the country has currently worlds second largest piracy number. And with piracy in this country we mean professional pirates, not home copying.



U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow has asked Russian Press and Mass Media Minister Mikhail Lesin for help investigating plants suspected of producing illegal music and videodiscs, the U.S. Embassy said last week.

Lesin's ministry is the licensing authority for Russian CD and DVD manufacturers.

According to the U.S. Embassy, Russia manufactures over 200 million CDs and DVDs a year, while domestic demand is estimated at 10 million.

"Russia has recently become a significant exporter of pirated products, and at conferences of film and recording industries, Russia was ranked second behind China as the largest producer of pirated goods," the U.S. Embassy said.

Yahoo also reports that the Russian authorities recently closed Moscow's largest outdoor market for video and audio products, where a lot pirated products where traded , but the market quickly reopened at a former television factory a few blocks away.
