Samsung Blu-ray players get Netflix support

Samsung and Netflix today issued a joint statement in which Samsung announced select Samsung Blu-ray players will have the ability to play streaming movies and TV shows through Netflix.

The Samsung BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray players are the fourth and fifth Blu-ray players receiving streaming Netflix ability.  People who already own the either player can download an update to enable streaming through Netflix.

However, the content streamed will be in regular format, and not the high-definition Blu-ray format, Netflix has been quick to point out.

The Samsung BD-2500 and BD-2550 are available now for $399.99 each.

In anticipation of a shift away from physical media, Netflix is working with manufacturers so consumers have the ability to watch streaming videos without the nee of of a DVD or Blu-ray disc.  Netflix is now working with four different companies for streaming movies -- including LG and Microsoft.

The company already has a "Watch Instantly" streaming service that is available to all subscribers for free, and subscribers can use the Internet to pick movies and TV episodes they want to watch.

Netflix currently has a streaming library that has more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes, with Netflix continuing to expand its digital library.

In the future, Netflix hopes to have its streaming service available on all major Blu-ray players, and will continue to work with a wider variety of manufacturers.
