Despite the fact that Samsung's Vice President of the Flat Panel Development division said OLEDs are too expensive and the Korean company will instead focus on LCDs and plasma HDTVs, Samsung still understands the importance of OLED technology.
"We can make larger displays, and we may demonstrate a larger OLED TV at the CES show in January," HS Kim said in an interview with WHFSV. "But how much more would you be willing to pay for such a set? I'm sure that if we marketed such a set at ten times the price of current LCD TVs, which is what it would be now, no one would buy it."
Regardless of the more expensive price tag, Samsung is expected to show off a 50-in. OLED during CES in Las Vegas next month. Competing companies will be at the show ready to unveil OLED technology -- although most of the technology shown won't be ready for years to come.
The South Korean company has already shown off a 40in. OLED TV in the past.
Along with several possible OLED TV announcements, Samsung reportedly created a new manufacturing process that will help reduce the price of OLEDs -- exact details will be released later down the road.
"OLED has a long way to go, technology-wise and cost-wise. It's coming, but we just don't know when it will be a viable consumer product."
