Until now, we have heard about companies either working with or backing the Blu-ray disc group or the HD-DVD group. Sony leads the group behind Blu-ray, while Toshiba leads the group behind HD-DVD. Now it has been reported that back in April, Sanyo who is part of the HD-DVD group has quietly joined the Blu-ray group also. As a result, Sanyo announced plans on making the key reading components for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats.
As Sanyo still remains part of the HD-DVD group, they also plan to have a HD-DVD player out on the market later this year. This follows the recent announcement where Toshiba announced plans to mass produce HD-DVD media at roughly the same time as the launch for HD-DVD recorders next spring.

It plans to have a DVD player compatible with the HD-DVD format on store shelves later this year. Read the full article here. |
As both Toshiba and Sony seem to have totally gone away with their plans to create a unified format and Sanyo now work for both sides, it will be interesting to see if any other companies decide to join both ends also. For Sanyo, this means a win-win situation as should either format die off in the future, they will be working with the other format.
