A German company has introduced a DVD that can be watched for 48 hours and then thrown away. The discs will be better known as 'Einmal' (once) and does its trick with a self-destructive coating that renders the disc unreadable after a preset time. Once you take away the disc's packaging the process will start and the clock starts ticking. Now you think, is this not bad for our environment? Well, many believed it was back in 2003, but others are happy since there is no DRM (digital rights management) on the discs... Besides watching the movie four times in 48 hours you can now start copying for as long as you want.
In 2003 Flexplay, from Atlanta, already came with this idea but after criticism from environmental groups the company lost all the attention. They still offer movies and they use a recycling program for these disposable discs, but it seems that they still don't generate enough bucks.
Maybe the Germans will be lucky with their product. They definitely make a chance since copying environmentally-friendly discs sounds better than piracy. 😉
