Sony BMG, currently the world's second largest music company has decided that from Monday, 2nd April, it will no longer accept band demos on CD or any other hard copy format. Instead, musicians will need to sign up for a record label website to put their music, photos and video content in a blog, such as with columbiademos.co.uk or rcademos.co.uk.
There are 100,000 new blogs created online each day, doubling around every 230 days. Many major artists already post blogs on social networking websites, such as Bebo and MySpace, which are open to the public for readers to get more info about the artists or find out about upcoming songs, live events, etc. So far, demo CDs were of little use for unsigned artists, since they have had little impact for artists lacking any significant references or reputation.
