Sony CD plant in the US prepares for new, super Audio CDs

Miami.com reports that after 20 years of producing audio CDs, the Sony CD
manufacturing plant in Terre Haut is now going to produce Super Audio CDs. The
Super Audio CD is the latest invention of Sony and Philips and should provide a
more richer sound over 6 channels. The SACD is a hybrid solution as the discs
also have a normal audio CD layer, so users can also play them in their
excisting equipment. The plant in Terre Haut, near Indianapolis is the first
manufacturing plant in the United States to produce the Super Audio CD, before
production was mainly in Japan.

Retailers of audio equipment hope hybrid SACD will
rekindle sales, which have taken a back seat to advances in video, such as
high-definition and plasma television sets. "This is kind of like
high-definition music. ... This is the first chance audio has really had
to shine," said Tom Mincy, a senior executive of Indianapolis electronics
chain Ovation.

Production of the hybrid discs in Terre Haute this week, initially at
15,000 a day, will be the latest volley in a war with backers of a rival
format: DVD audio
discs.
