Sony: PlayStation 2 game console shipments to top 50 million



The Sony Corporation has said today that shipments of its PlayStation 2 game console have topped no less than 50 million pieces. Thanks to a great holiday shopping season the PlayStation 2 shipments stood at 50.03 million units as of yesterday:



The sales mark was achieved 14 months earlier than the original PlayStation and confirms Sony's dominance in the home videogame market, with PlayStation 2 far out-selling Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox.

PlayStation has become a key profit generator for Sony, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, as it toils along with other Japanese electronics giants to emerge from a slump that hit the high-tech sector two years ago.

Sony has also said the number of software titles targeted for PlayStation 2 has exceeded 1,500 and shipments of those games have topped 300 million worldwide. Read the complete article here.
