Sony Playstation Portable gathers pace, development kits available

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that Sony Computer
Entertainment is about to deliver the initial batch ot
development kits for the Playstation Portable console. The handheld console will
be a direct competitor to Nintendo's GameBoy Advance handheld
device and it's expected to be released at next year's E3 event in
May.

The Sony company also has intentions to
make use of new technologies to provide content to the public in the future. For
example, Sony America has announced that it has plans to launch a new
downloadable music service in Europe and North America next year:

With the ability to watch DVD quality movies as well as play
graphically sophisticated videogames, the PSP looks to be the most
versatile and powerful portable on the market - if Sony can deliver the
unit at a comparable price to GBA, as it's previously pledged, it's
difficult to see how this handheld can miss.

In other Sony news, the company re-confirmed its
intentions to make use of new technologies to provide content to the
public in the future. Sony Chairman Nobuyuki Idei predicted that in the
near future, people would increasingly use phones and handheld devices -
the PSP? - to gain access to media traditionally access through radio and
TV.

With this in mind, Howard Stringer of Sony of America
announced plans to launch a new downloadable music service in Europe and
North America next year. Surprisingly however, Sony did not draw upon the
potential of the PSP or the forthcoming PS3 console as key examples for
convergence of these different mediums - very strange, considering that
both devices are likely to form key parts of Sony's business strategy in
the future.
