Sony announces new dual format DVD recorders

CES 2003 starts today and Sony has already presented interesting new products. Among them you'll find a slim drive DVD±R/RW writer for notebooks and a set-top DVD±R/RW recorder. The DRU-500A/DRX-500UL writers also get an "X" in the end of the product names indicating that they are shipped with support for 4x DVD+R from the start (this feature is available as a free firmware upgrade too).

  • Two new VAIO notebook PCs, including one with an integrated dual-format DVD recordable drive (PCG-GRV680), the first of its kind;
  • A dual-compatible DVD recorder home deck (RDR-GX7) that has an i.LINK(R) IEEE-1394 port to connect compatible camcorders for creating home-movie DVDs for sharing and archiving;
  • Two new dual RW (+ and -) DVD drives for the PC, recording at up to 4X speeds using compatible media.
