Sony confirms U.S. online music downloads service

Sony has today confirmed
that they will launch a music downloads service in America this year. This
news comes as no surprise as Sony has already launched music download
services in Europe and thus it was expected that America would follow soon.
Here's some more information on the Sony U.S. music service:

Like Apple's iTunes Music Store, the Sony
service will charge $ 1 per song and have a library of around 500,000
songs. It will also be designed to integrate with Sony's portable players,
possibly including those using the new 1GB MiniDisc format.

Support for other, non-Sony players is expected to be provided at a
later date. Apples iTMS, on the other hand, is only compatible with iPods,
as the company says that iPod sales are the only way it can make money
from the store.
