Sony heads to Latin America

Sony has officially announced it will take its next-generation PlayStation 3 game console and PlayStation Portable (PSP) mobile console to Latin America.

"Our commitment to expand PlayStation business into Latin American supports our vision to provide access to social entertainment experiences that can be shared among friends and family from around the world," SCEA Latin America director Mark Stanley said in a statement.   "This expansion is the direct result of us listening closely to our community, and we're proud to deliver premium hardware and software services that will allow them to easily connect, play and communicate with one another."

Latin American residents have been able to legally acquire the PS3, PSP and video games in the past, but were forced to purchase them from specialty electronics shops.  This is the first time Sony is bringing this line of products and video game titles to directly to the region, where Sony hopes it will receive a solid sales boost.

To try and tap into a market with 500 million consumers, Sony will introduce its products in 13 Latin American nations utilizing its consumer electronics division.

The Japanese electronics giant will offer gamers the ability to use the PS3 Bluetooth Headset and PlayStation Wireless Keypad, among other add-ons popular in other parts of the world.  Sony fans will also have access to the PlayStation Network after Sony products head to Latin America.

Sony will also update its PlayStation.com web site with a localized section aimed specifically for Latin America.
