According
to DigiTimes, Sony has responded to a need from local Taiwanese
retail marketers for lower priced notebooks. They have just recently lowered the
cost of dual layer drives for these devices by over 20%
Prices
for Sony external entry-level 16x DVD Dual burners in the Taiwan retail
market have recently dropped by 22-23% from NT$6,000 (US$181) to
NT$4,600-4,700 (US$139-142) following a growing demand for low-priced
notebooks, according to local retail channels.
Leading Taiwanese own-brand makers Lite-On IT, BenQ and
Asustek Computer do not plan to cut prices, for the NT$3,500-4,000
(US$106-121) retail prices of their external 16x DVD Dual burners are
still significantly lower than Sony's, the source pointed out. However,
NU, a second-tier local brand, will lower retail prices for its external
16x DVD Dual burners to NT$3,000 (US$91) or below, the source
indicated. |
In a side note, DigiTimes also reports that both Lite-On
and Quanta storage are preparing to make slim-type Super Multi DVD burners to
compete with LG Data Storage, Matsushita-Kotobuki Electronics Industries (MKE)
and TEAC with production beginning as early as next year.
