Sony president says Xbox 360 is more like an Xbox 1.5

Japanese website Impress PC Watch, has had the opportunity to interview the president of Sony's Computer Entertainment division, Ken Kutaragi. In this translation found over at Team Xbox News, we can read that Mr. Kutaragi was explaining the Cell architecture and how it is geared toward entertainment in the PlayStation 3, he says this will make their product superior to even a Windows Media Center PC.

The talk then quickly shifted after that statement, to the argueably hotter issue of how the PlayStation 3 would stack up in relation to the Xbox 360. Kutaragi wasted no time pointing out that the Xbox 360 architecture in his eyes was more of an evolution over the Xbox and not a revolution, saying simply that 'the Xbox 360 is more of an Xbox 1.5 than a next generation console." In fact, he seemed rather tickled that Microsoft was focusing so heavily on their present hardware strategy.

"The approach of adopting multiple, all-purpose processors will just raise integer calculation capabilities, that will only benefit general applications," said Kutaragi. "This approach will increase the machine's capabilities as an all-purpose computer, but it won't change the type of entertainment."

Finally, Kutaragi gave the final deathblow to the Xbox 360 specs saying 'We welcome the fact that Microsoft invests is this area but, by only improving the graphic performance and increasing the output resolution of the current Xbox, [Xbox 360] won't change anything from the current world of videogame consoles."

Games consoles are becoming more and more of an entertainmentr center for the home. Let's just hope that this competition between Sony and Microsoft causes us, the consumer, to continue to be dazzled with performance and functionality leaps. The only thing better would be if the PlayStation 3 was out right now, so we could get some real world comparison against the Xbox 360.
