D4rk0n3 and DamnedIfIknow used our news submit to tell us: "$750?!?! OUCH!" Here,
we have a tidbit of information about the drive from PC World. The image is one from a Sony press release that D4rk0n3 submitted for
us to check out.
| Sony will begin selling an after-market Blu-ray Disc drive next month that can be added to existing desktop computers. The BWU-100A drive supports burning to single and dual-layer BD-R (single use) or BD-RE (rewriteable) discs. A single-layer disc can store up to 25G bytes of data or about 2 hours of high-definition video and the dual-layer disc can accommodate double these amounts. Sony will ship the drive with CyberLink"s CyberLink BD Solution burning software. The drive can write at 2X Blu-ray Disc speed, so burning a full 25G-byte disc takes about 50 minutes, Sony said. The drive will cost $US750 in North America. Sony has not announced pricing or availability for other markets. |
We should
not expect prices to be any lower any time soon either if this report translated
from the China Commercial Times by the IMDB is
accurate! In it, we can read that Sony's production facilities have not been
able to meet the demand for the diode that generates the blue laser at the heart
of the HD system. Both Sony's own plants and those of Japan's Nichia Corp., the
only two suppliers of the diodes, have been plagued by production problems, the
newspaper said. The supply problem, it observed, could not only delay
production of Blu-ray DVD players for Sony and other manufacturers, but could
also delay the release of PlayStation 3 models, now scheduled for November.
