Gil T Pleasure used our news submit to tell us "A few days ago, CDFreaks.com posted its very first review a standalone DVD recorder, Folks who are in the market for a standalone DVD recorder may wish to read this article from Tom"s Hardware Guide comparing 5 of the leading standalone DVD recorders models."
| Two products stand out from our selection - the Sony RDR-HX910 and the Lite-On LVW-5045. The former is the most technically advanced; the HX710 version with a 160 GB disk is the best choice due to lower cost. The Sony"s ergonomics and picture quality put it on the top shelf, while its compatibility with both recording formats is an undeniable plus, as is its automatic chaptering function. The Lite-On, on the other hand, offers an unbeatable quality-to-price ratio. True, its design is a little too "plastic," but that"s amply compensated for by its innovative and user-friendly functionalities.
All the newer models of digital recorders from Sony have the new Intelligent Scene Chaptering system. With this feature, the unit automatically chapters all recordings using a scene-change algorithm, somewhat similar to what's available with video editing software. When you select a recording, the various sequences are displayed in the form of successive thumbnails, so commercials are clearly identified, making it easy to identify them. |
This intelligent chaptering system seems interesting enough. Perhaps someone has some experience with it and can elaborate on it for us. The Pioneer in the article looks nice as well. If you want to see the results of the roundup, or are just curious to read the comparisons, you should head over to Tom's Hardware and see what they had to say. Unfortunately, this is just a quick look of the highlights and features of each machine and how they differ from one to the other, but it does give us some good information.
If you are interested in the LiteOn, one of the recommended devices at Tom's, you can of course read Seán's in-depth review if you missed it the other day. Feel free to leave your comments here or better yet, carry on the discussion in our DVD Recorder & Home Entertainment Forum where you will find others interested in Standalone devices.
