Start saving your pennies. The price may seem a bit high at first glance, especially if you decide that you need to expand the system to hold 400 movies rather than 160. That brings the cost of the base system up another 6,000. Then after all, what good is a server without an additional player, lets see now that is another 4000 bucks. Then of course sales tax, 37000 plus...well you get the picture. This is for the "serious movie buff" that doesn't want to fool with a frustrating DVD package. Or a spouse.
The only reason this is being posted here is this product is a collection of patent pending technologies that may be of interest. One that caught my eye is this unit can copy bit for bit uncompressed copy protected movies, protection and all. But don't get too excited. This unit was manufactured with Macrovision at the helm under the watchful eye of the dreaded DVD Copy Control Association. Once you rip the DVD's to this box, they ain't going nowhere. Or are they? No, of course not, that's impossible.
On the other hand, if it were at a more reasonable price point. It would really be a nice appliance. It's loaded with features. Take a look.

Once imported, the homeowner can have instantaneous access to their entire movie library utilizing an intuitive, easy-to-use proprietary user interface which provides multiple ways to browse and select movies, play movies, jump to favorite scenes, pause, resume, and exercise parental control over which movies are available in each viewing zone. Each room can be configured for individual preferences such as audio settings, the screen aspect ratio and parental control. Movies can be selected either by the on-screen movie list sorted by title, genre, director, or actor; or users can peruse the vivid cover art which appears on-screen and automatically shuffles similar titles into view. Homeowners can even scroll through their user-programmable favorites menu, a recommended movie list or even a pre-selected "watch-soon" list. The Kaleidescape Movie Guide Service can be controlled with current AMX, Crestron and IP-based touch panels, or universal remote controllers. |
Wow, what a price for convenience. The High Definition Kaleidescape System is a rack mount affair that can easily be transported by a two wheeled cart to an idling van. Consisting of a DVD Reader, a Movie Player and one Server with 5 "cartridges" that will hold 160 movies, all chatting happily together over Ethernet on a proprietary operating system. So, if you have enough money to burn a wet cow and would like to know more about the capabilities of this unit, take a look over at Biz Link.
