Strand on the line with DivX

CestLaVie used our newssubmit to tell us that DivXNetworks signed it's first content deal. They made with indie distributor Strand Releasing.

On their website you can 'rent' the movie for 5 days, for the price of 4,95$. This will make the movie stream to your computer as long as you pay.

Strand will license the DivX Open Video System technology beginning with downloads of the 1995 indie film World and Time Enough, available through its Web site (www.strandreleasing.com).

Internet users with high-speed connections can buy a five-day rental of the film for $4.95 by clicking on the "Buy Now" link on the Strand site. Users can begin watching the film on a full screen minutes after the movie begins downloading.

San Diego-based DivXNetworks makes the DivX compression/decompression system widely used for transmitting video through the Internet. In August, the company released its latest version, DivX 4.0, which is the centerpiece of its VOD products that will soon include encryption and digital rights management tools.

You might want to know how this 'renting' works. Well according to the DivX FAQ, you will need your computer to be connected to the internet. The DivX player will check if you are allowed to view the movie and then decide whetever you can view the movie or not.
