Success in converting Lite-On 32123S to 40125S, almost!

OC-Freak, one of our moderators is probably one of the biggest Lite-On fan available and he's always into experiments. But now another forum member (IgNite) has tried to convert his Lite-On 32123S (32x Z-CLV) to a Lite-On 40125S (40x P-CAV).

The drive should now also support Mount Rainier, according to the Nero Info tool (See picture in forum thread):

Well i couldnt resist the urge to find out first hand if the 32123S would accept the ZS0G fw that's been floating around.

My original firmware was XS0U. Obviously the standard ZS0G.exe would not flash my drive cause its not the 40x drive, so I modded it using a hex editor:

  • ZS0G --> XS0V

    I proceeded to flash and everthing went fine.

    Rebooted and went into windows. I put a cd in and thats when the problem started. I get this weird eject problem where it keeps ejecting 4 to 5 times before it settles down and I can access the cd.

    This problem was not present with the original XS0U fw.

    I tried burning a cd, and it worked fine under Nero. Nero said it was burning at 40x, 6000kb/s. So I was happy with that. According to Nero Mt. Rainer is supported and so it PCAV. I have not tried Mt. Rainer though

    I would say, don't try this at home if you don't know what you are doing, you can seriously damage your drive and it will most likely void your warranty.

    Just keep an eye on our Lite-On Forum to see what happens next. CPU overclocking is for sissies, CD-RW drive overclocking is for real men !
