SunnComm MediaMax leads in the US, cutting casual CD piracy

Sunncomm International has been very pleased by how well its MediaMax copy protection and enhancement technology has taken off.  So far around 20 million discs have been sold featuring MediaMax technology and over 30 record labels have approved MediaMax for both their commercial and pre-release CDs.

While the main purpose of MediaMax has been to prevent casual copying, SunnComm have aimed to get back the consumers trust by allowing limited amount of CD to CD copying, individual track to compilation CD mixes as well as Apple Mac compatibility.  MediaMax also supports enhancements that run entirely from CD, thus ruling out the need for 3rd party software, let alone a system reboot before the disc can be played as with some other competing CD copy protection software.

SunnComm also aims to offer MediaMax for online music services as well as music kiosks such that when consumers buy music online or using a Kiosk, the disc will also be copy protected.  At present, while most online music services use some form of DRM measures in their music, the DRM is no longer effective once the music is written to CD-R/RW since the consumer can easily rip the music back off into a format of their own choice.

SunnComm International, Inc. (Pink Sheets: SCMI) is pleased to announce that 2005 is the year that its flagship copy protection and enhancement technology -- MediaMax -- became "the technology of choice" for dozens of music labels throughout North America. SunnComm believes it has maintained this uncontested market dominance by paying vigilant attention to the needs of the record labels and the end users who purchase music.

By working very closely with several of the largest record labels in the world, SunnComm has unquestionably found a balance between protecting the rights of the music producers, artists and record labels while providing the CD buyers with an expanded multimedia experience. More than 30 record labels have approved MediaMax for use on commercial and pre-release CDs and it has been "battle tested" by millions and millions of CD buyers.

"MediaMax has proven itself to be superior on every level. I think it's important for record labels, CD manufacturers, music studios and artists to realize just how substantial those differences really are," declared Peter Jacobs, president of SunnComm. "When CD copy protection technologies are talked about in the press and even within our own industry, they are all seen as similar technologies. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth." Here are just of few of MediaMax's unique and outstanding features that make it the best choice for record labels, artists and consumers worldwide:

Apple/Mac Compatibility -- MediaMax has been Apple/Mac compatible since 2003. SunnComm CDs can be played and protected on Macintosh computers with the same look and feel as the Windows-based interface. SunnComm has always believed that Apple/Mac users represent a significant portion of music listeners, so creating a technology that wasn't compatible with this operating system was unthinkable.

It is interesting to see how SunnComm have made sure that its MediaMax technology was compatible with iMacs, claiming that a good portion of CD listeners use Apple Mac's.  However, one thing SunnComm and all other companies offering copy-protection for CDs lack is iPod support.  There are a lot more consumers listening to music on an iPod than on an Apple Mac and lacking iPod support is likely upsetting a lot of consumers, like what is happening with Sony BMG's recent copy protection push.

Finally, while SunnComm claims their MediaMax technology has proven to
greatly reduce casual piracy, so far they have not come up with any statistics
to back this.  Chances are that if one cannot copy their disc, they will
resort to another source such as a file sharing network on the Internet
instead.
