SunnComm International, which is the creator of best-selling MediaMax Copy Protection / Enhancement technology for CDs has received approval from several of its largest recording label clients to copy protect its discs with MediaMax version 5. So far, this version has been put through various tests on pre-releases as well as commercial releases, consisting of 22 releases in total since the 2004 Holiday season. Peter Jacobs, SunnComm's president claims this MediaMax version to be the best CD management technology available today, along with being North America's leading supplier of CD copy protection.
Like Sony BMG's "Sterile burning" protection , this MediaMax version includes a utility to allow a limited number of protected copies of the original disc to be made. However, unlike other CD copy protection systems available, it also gives the user option to mix in music from another source such as MP3's on the recorded copy protected CD. This allows the user to create custom compilation CDs, while still ensuring the recorded disc is protected from further copies.
Finally, the software includes a utility to extract the contents of the CD to a DRM protected format such as for playback on a compatible portable player or building a music library on the PC. The other advantage is that there is no issue with having to pay a double royalty for having two versions of each song on the CD.

MediaMax is the first content protection and enhancement product to include SecureBurn(TM) -- a feature which restricts the consumer's ability to make "a copy of a copy." In addition, SunnComm's newest technology incorporates Track-Level Protection(TM) which enables consumers to mix content protected tracks with unprotected tracks, such as music in MP3 format, on the same CD. While SunnComm aims to be accounting for both copy protection and allowing the user to make their own copies or compilations, it still has the drawback in that iPod users cannot simply transfer their CD's content to the iPod, at least until Apple licenses out FairPlay DRM technology.
