Symantec Security Experts have identified a Trojan that is designed to destroy PSP (Play Station Portable) systems. This has been dubbed Trojan.PSPBrick and is currently classified by Symantec as a Category 1, which is the lowest threat level on their 1-5 scale. The Trojan is hosted on a malicious website and is fraudulently advertised as a downloadable "hack" that should allow users to run their own homebrew games. After installation, the Trojan will maliciously delete critical PSP system files, rendering the unit useless. The only way to get infected is to manually download and install the file yourself! Be careful what you download!
| People will not be affected if they don't arbitrarily download unknown files. Unfortunately, those who may inadvertently install the Trojan.PSPBrick are out of luck. Symantec warns that it will delete critical system files and essentially break your PSP. "You'll have to send it back to Sony for repairs," said Friedricks. Of course, any kind of hack or mod not endorsed by Sony violates the license agreement and voids the warranty on the PSP. |
Symantec also warns that this is only a taste of things to come. These types of Trojans and Viruses will become more prevalent in the future. Check out the full story on 1up.com. Don't forget to let all the cdfreaks know what you think by reacting below!
