With the increasing popularity of DVD camcorders, one problem consumers are starting to encounter is the limit to how much the small 8cm disc holds as well as how easily it can be scratched. Last year, they introduced 8cm DVD-R media featuring its armour plating (now called DURABIS) to protect against scratches, UV light and other rough handling. Now, TDK aims to get around both these issues by offering double-sided DVD-R protected by its DURABIS hard coating .
Unlike Movie DVDs, consumers are more likely to roughly handle discs from Camcorders including exposure to sunlight, finger prints (especially for double-sided discs), scratching while loading, etc. While the physical tape in a camcorder's tape housing may not be durable, surface scratches, fingerprints, etc. had no effect on playability, where as when it comes to DVD based camcorders, surface damage such as from poor handling can have a major affect on playability.

The new 8cm ScratchProof Double Sided DVD recording media, according to a company press release, uses exclusive DURABIS hard coating technology on both sides of the discs. This technology protects the discs against scratches, enhances the disc's static discharge rate and prevents damage from exposure to ultraviolet rays. The line, which comes in Doubled Sided DVD-R, DVD-R and DVD-RW, is rated for up to x2 recording and offers a 2.8GB capacity. |
While double sided mini DVD-R's may be a handy method of offering double the capacity, they do have a drawback in that one cannot label their discs apart from what ever they can write near the disc centre. Unfortunately unlike tape based camcorders, there is no way of being able to tape over footage again apart from the single-sided 8cm DVD-RW disc.
