Taiwan makers of Blu-ray/HD-DVD drives at risk from PUH supply

Taiwanese optical disc drives manufacturers are getting ready for blue laser player production, but some may have a bit of a problem, according to this report at DigiTimes. It seems that several Will have to rely on outside sources for the pick up heads (PUH). Apparently, all the patents for the laser diodes are held by Japanese companies. Named in the article as holding these type patents are: Hitachi, Sharp, Pioneer, Sony, and Sanyo Electric.

Although Lite-On IT and BenQ cooperate technologically with Sony and Royal Philips Electronics, respectively, the top two Taiwanese ODD makers are at a disadvantage in obtaining PHUs for making blue-laser DVD drives/players when compared with Hitachi LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST), since those firms have internal sources for PUHs.
