We are all aware of the HD DVD Blu-ray war and that the Blu-ray format seems to be winning out based on sales of media. Retailers have long expressed their dislike of this mess and clearly want to sell a single format.
Target had previously announced that they would carry exclusively Blu-ray players as of this fall and now they have quietly expanded their shelf space to carry roughly twice the number of Blu-ray titles while keeping the space for HD DVD at the same levels. Since a number of studios have made the decision to only release in one HD format, Target, as well as other retailers, really cannot give up either format, but they can indicate their preference.
This is a bold move for Target, especially as the lowest priced HD DVD player is currently $200 less than the Blu-ray version. It also looks like Walmart will be lining up behind HD DVD. As always, the wise user will wait in the wings before making any major investment in either format.
