USA Today has a great article this morning about my new favorite thing to spend money on- DVD movies. There are trivia stats all through this thing! Such as, it used to be, a new "big" movie was released on DVD maybe once every 4 to 6 weeks. Now they're coming out out every single week with another blockbuster. By the way, what's up with releasing these things on Tuesdays, this is annoying as heck when you read about a special on Sunday, but you can't get the title until the following Tuesday? Maybe it gives better opening week statisitics.

The latest big event on DVD: The Incredibles, which in its first day last Tuesday sold 5 million copies, mainly on DVD, in North America. Even at a discounted price of $20 a DVD, that's $100 million, far surpassing the $70 million the movie took in during its first weekend in theaters. DVD debuts:
Though box-office revenue has remained steady at about $9.2 billion a year in recent years, since the mid-'90s, home video sales have surpassed the domestic box office. Last year, DVD sales alone '” not counting the VHS format '” skyrocketed to $15.5 billion. |
This is hard to believe, home video is outpacing box offfice sales at the theater and in no time flat as compared to theater ticket sales! But, when Finding Nemo and Shrek 2 pull down $200 million in their first week on DVD, you can believe it again. But that's chicken feed, The Lion King tore up the world and made $340 million the first week it came out......in 1995!
