Last spring, a brief discussion thread on CDFreaks briefly touched on the existence (or lack thereof) of a Plextor PX-704A. Japanese website ASCII24 resurrects this mystery in a March 12 article noting that Buffalo, Inc. has released a burner claiming to be just such an animal: a 4x, dual-format burner with this model number. "Yet," the article says, "no such model number or specification set exists on Plextor's website. Normally, a new drive would come out under the original manufacturer's brand name before being rebadged and sold as an OEM product, making this a rare case."
With DVD burning speeds of 4x for +R/RW and -R, 2x for -RW, and CD-R burning at 40x, the 704A "is the equivalent of a 708A whose +R speed has been knocked down to 4x." The article goes on to note that this burner would be the same as Plextor's earlier PX-504A drive, except that the 504A didn't support -R/RW burning. The article concludes by noting that the drive is selling for Y13,800 (120 dollars US) at major retailer Tsukumo, which "is inexpensive for a Plextor drive."
