Toshiba to unveil HD-DVD supporting notebooks in 2005

Gil T Pleasure and GristyMcFisty, both used our news submit to tell us interesting news involving the battle for the next generation DVD formats. Toshiba, one popular member of the HD-DVD group, will unveil notebooks that support the HD-DVD technology in December 2005.

CNet reported according to an article in the Nihon Keizai daily,  that the notebooks will be released under Toshiba's "Qosmio" brand and will support conventional DVDs and CDs in addition to HD-DVD.

TOKYO--Japan's Toshiba will introduce laptops with HD DVD technology in December 2005, aiming to pressure rivals in the battle over formats for next-generation DVDs, the Nihon Keizai daily reported Wednesday.

The paper said Toshiba, Japan's second-largest electronics conglomerate, would price the new laptops at a level similar to that of its current high-end DVD-equipped models, at around 200,000 to 300,000 yen ($1,845 to $2,770).

Toshiba officials were not immediately available for comment.

Compatible medias for the HD-DVD format should be available next year, so it´s really possible for Toshiba to release such a notebook in December 2005. However, I believe that the companies around Blu-ray start earlier in this market and the first drives for desktop pc's will enter the market in the 1st quater 2005. Notebook drives and notebooks will follow in second or third quater, in any case before December I think. It's maybe the same for HD-DVD, but Blu-ray has better odds to win the battle.

The battle HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray is like the fight David vs. Goliath, but in this case Goliath will win. Almost all of the really popular and important companies are supporting Blu-ray and I don't think that this will change in the future.
