It seems that
321 Studios, the developer of DVD copy software DVDxCopy have received
some unexpected support from the congress. The company has been calling for its
customers to join its fair use protection program (http://www.protectfairuse.org) and
finally some progress seems to be made. In an internal email we have obtained
the founder of 321 Studios has announced that a congressional hearing will take
place somewhere in May. The hearing is initiated by the Chairman of
Appropriations (Congressman Barton) and has several potential positive
influences on the 321 Studios case.
The company expects that it will garner major
support from major and important powers in Washington and roundtable support for
he Fair Use Rights Bill H.R. 107 that amend the DCMA to include only those
technologies which primary purpose is to infrige copyright. This bill has been
proposed by Congressman Boucher and is very important to the the companies case.
Supporters of this Bill can show their support on the ProtectFairUse website
where one can also send emails, faxes and letters to the people who make
decisions. Earlier actions that were initiated trough this site seem to have
caused this congressional hearing.
Another reason why this will likely be positive to
321 Studios is because it will be able to show the arrogance of the MPAA and its
chairman Jack Valenti who has said: "If you want a backup, buy another
DVD". Besides that it might make the MPAA
very nervous that their allegations and accusations of massive piracy and huge
revenue losseswill be revealed as untrue (and greedy). 321 Studios has always been clear that it does not support piracy but
wants end users to have the right to make a personal safety backup, the company
thanks everyone who has helped fighting for fair
use.
