Universal to start releasing Blu-ray titles July 22nd

Universal Studios is set to start releasing Blu-ray titles to match its DVD release times on all of its new titles when it officially starts releasing its first Blu-ray tiles on July 22nd.  From the time the HD DVD format launched to the time Toshiba pulled the plug on the format earlier this year, Universal Studios has been the biggest backer of HD DVD.  The studio is expected to make an official announcement today.  Originally Universal had no interest in taking on Blu-ray all the way up until HD DVD was officially killed off.

The studio expects to release 40 titles on Blu-ray by the year end, which will start off with Doomsday, "The Mummy", "The Mummy Returns" and "the Scorpion King" along with 5 big of its big feature movies of the summer.  Some of its planned Blu-ray title releases will include movies from its earlier HD DVD catalogue titles.
