*Update* Game Jackal V2 now available featuring 'Guardian Control'

*Update*
CD Freaks will present a review of this new version 2 software in the next few days. Should be interesting!

Ockingshay used our news submit to tell us "Full version released today, 1 day earlier than expected!!" Here's a description of the software by Reviewer/Moderator Womble taken from the introduction of his "Game Jackal: A first look" where he
evaluated version one for us:

GameJackal is a product that has been designed to remove the need of having to always use your CD to play your games. I can here the cry going up "Have you never heard of Virtual Drives". Well yes I have. The difference here though is about 700mb of disk space. GameJackal make a small profile, as small as 30kb up to 40mb which it uses to run the game instead of using the entire image like a virtual drive does.

That way, if you want to play a game, you just fire up the interface and pick a profile and that's it, no more digging for CD's!

How does it work?

Game Jackal works by making profiles of your favorite games. The profile creation process is straightforward and is performed while you're playing your favorite games. Using the profile wizard you simply:-

  •  Enter a name for the new profile
  • Select the game executable (optional)
  • Insert the game CD-ROM
  • Play your game!

That's it... your game profile is now created and "cd free" gaming is now a reality. Next time you want to play that game simply select it from the profiles list within the Game Jackal interface.

Features:

  • An easy to use interface, providing the user with a single tool for "cd free" gaming.
  • The creation of a Game Jackal profile is performed while you are playing your favorite game!
  • Using the auto update feature, your version of Game Jackal will always be the latest version available.
  • Guardian Control, this feature allows for the password protection of game profiles in addition to specifing when and how long a game can be played.

Benefits:

  • No longer do you need to find and insert the game's CD-ROM.
  • Preserve the original game's CD-ROM: one of the problems with having a favorite game is that the CD-ROM gets damaged over time.
  • Game load times are dramatically shortened**.

Guardian Control

Ok... so Game Jackal provides you with a way to protect game CD's from the little hands of a young gamer, but how do we then stop these same young gamers from playing games that may not be appropriate?

Game Jackal contains a very unique and powerful feature called Guardian Control, this allows a game profile to be password protected thereby ensuring that only specifc users (i.e. those knowing the password) can play the game. And because your CD-ROM's are now put away for safe keeping, there's no fear of accidently leaving a disc in the drive for a young gamer to find.

So now that we have limited what a young gamer can play, wouldn't it be great if we could limit when games could be played? Well once again Game Jackal provides a way... Guardian Control also allows rules to be created that detail when and how long games can be played. These rules can be as simple as defining a time (i.e. between 6:30PM and 8:30PM) during the week days in which games can be played to complex rules that involve many periods in which a young person can go gaming.

* This information was compiled in-house, the results produced a success rate of close to 93%. The exact percentage may differ depending on a number of factors, most notable the underlying hardware.

** Load speed can be game
dependant.

Well that Guardian control could come in handy. A few of the newer games listed on the website that are compatible with Game Jackal are: The Sims 2, Rome: Total War, Doom 3, Battlefield Vietnam and Farcry. They are offering a 30 day trial download that according to the website, is not crippled in any way. After 30 days you need to purchase a license though, which at the moment is $29.95. By the way, at the website they are warning that version one is NOT compatible with version two and they are sending out licenses to all registered users.

Don't forget to stop by our forums, where Wombles lengthy thread is still running. You might even bump into Ockingshay there, as he is involved with this software and will help you with any questions! Along with several others that have an interest in the program.
